Earlier in April, Ford indicated that, despite a $4.5 billion investment into electrification technology, and a promise to introduce 13 new hybrid or electric vehicles by 2020, that the company had no immediate plans of developing a long-range EV.

Tesla and Chevy, meanwhile, are both introducing relatively affordable all-electric models with a 200-mile range by the end of next year.

Ford's director of electrification programs, Kevin Layden, assured the press, "With the launch of the Focus Electric at 100 miles, it is going to satisfy a big chunk of the population. It's going to be really affordable and a step up from where we are now."

So, is 100 miles on one charge enough?

President and CEO Mark Fields was asked directly at a conference call on April 28th whether Ford had a 200-mile range electric vehicle in the works. Fields let slip, "clearly that's something we are developing for," sparking a whirlwind of Tesla vs Ford rumors.

No time frame has been given so far, and Ford leadership has been very hush-hush about any specific details, except to assert, "We want to make sure we are among the best or the leaders in [the EV segment.]"
